Kia Motors Ireland have extended their plug in hybrid range with the addition of the Ceed SW which will be available at Joe Duffy Kia from next month. Added to the Sorento PHEV that will arrive early next year Kia now boasts an electrified range of four plug-in hybrids (Niro, XCeed, Ceed SW and Sorento) and two full EV’s the e-Niro and e-Soul – Irish Car of the Year 2020.
“Our definition of an electrified car is one with an actual plug “ commented Kia Motors Ireland Managing Director, Ronan Flood “ And in that regard Kia is market leader in the combined EV/PHEV segment with Niro being Ireland’s best-selling plug in .The addition of Ceed SW and Sorento and other exciting product to come will consolidate the brand’s position as a leader in vehicle electrification .Our PHEV strategy is to offer consumers an affordable and greener alternative to HEV models and we are pleased to announce that the Ceed SW comes on the market at just €28,450 (including the SEAI grant) .”
The Ceed SW PHEV joins it companion XCeed in giving an extra choice for a C segment Plug In and these cars are the first Kia plug in models built in Europe and exclusively for Europe .The car is powered by a combination of 8.9 kWh lithium-polymer battery pack, a 44.5 kW electric motor, and an efficient 1.6-litre ‘Kappa’ four-cylinder GDI (gasoline direct injection) engine. The powertrain’s total power and torque output is 141 ps and 265 Nm, enabling the SW to accelerate from 0-to-100 kph in 10.8 seconds.
The powertrain is paired with a six-speed double-clutch transmission (6DCT), allowing drivers to shift gear for themselves, ensuring a more enjoyable drive than other hybrid vehicles equipped with electronic continuously-variable transmissions (e-CVT). Traditional e-CVT hybrids convert a portion of engine output through the electric motor, resulting in power losses from energy conversion. Kia’s 6DCT differs by allowing the full output of both the engine and motor to be transferred in parallel through the transmission, with minimal loss of energy.
Standard regenerative braking technology allows the SW PHEV to harvest kinetic energy and recharge their battery packs while coasting or braking, further enhancing the overall efficiency of the powertrain. The Ceed Sports Wagon is capable of travelling up to 60 kilometres on zero-emissions electric power (NEDC combined cycle) making it an perfect for shorter daily driving while still having the flexibility for longer business or leisure journeys.
The PHEV version is distinguished by a new closed ‘tiger-nose’ grille at the front of the car to aid aerodynamic efficiency and the charging port is integrated into the left front wing of the car. Equipped as standard with 17 inch aluminium alloy wheels the car also features a 8” infotainment screen, push button start ,electronic parking brake ,wireless phone charging and smart cruise control .
The SW PHEV was engineered from the start to accommodate its new hybrid powertrain resulting in a minimal impact on packaging, with the structure adapted from the start to contain the powertrain’s battery pack. The 8.9 kWh battery pack is located alongside the 37-litre fuel tank beneath the rear bench, unlike many other plug-in hybrid vehicles, in which the battery pack takes up valuable cargo space. The SW provides 437 litres of luggage space, and up to 1,506 litres with the 40:20:40 split-fold rear seats folded down with a dedicated space beneath the boot floor of each car to store the charging cable when not in use.
